  • What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes or T1D, is an auto-immune disorder that shuts down critical insulin production in the pancreas.  It can happen to anyone at any age.  Unlike Type 2 which is most often caused by lifestyle and reversible, there is currently no known cause or cure for T1D.
2 years ago, our then 4 year old daughter Annabelle was diagnosed with T1D.  3 weeks ago our 8 year old son Jack was also diagnosed.  As any T1D or family member will tell you, it's a tough road.  Without natural insulin production, Jack and Annabelle face a daily grind of constant finger prick glucose tests and a specific balance of carbohydrates and insulin injections to keep glucose levels in check.  Life with T1D is balancing act - high glucose over the long term will result in severe health problems such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and amputations.  Low blood glucose can come on very suddenly and can result in seizure and far worse.
But there is reason to be hopeful - JDRF is an amazing organization that raises money for the sole purpose of finding a cure and better treatment for type 1 diabetes - check out this inspiring video (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7o8cjdv_MXk&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D7o8cjdv_MXk).   We are having our first charity bootcamp at WIP on Thanksgiving morning to benefit JDRF.  It is a free workout and open to all, but donations are encouraged. There will also be a silent auction - items for bid include a wine tasting dinner for 6 at Max Downtown, tickets to the NY Rangers,  a weekend in New York and a Heineken "swag bag" (trust me, it's good stuff!).
This workout is an RSVP only event, so please email Mary Kate at marykate@wipfitness.com.  Please request either a 8:45 or 9:30 time and we will do our best to accommodate. 100% of proceeds will go to JDRF and a collection jar will be in the gym all week. On behalf all Type 1 Diabetics and their families, thank you for your support.
